Changes this drastic can divide opinion, but that's the cost of all risks. Instead, we get a slow-paced story of two strangers falling in love, that takes us on an emotional ride, with hardly any of the action or violence that the game is famous for. The decision to leave out Joel and Ellie’s involvement in this re-telling of ‘Bill’s Town’ meant leaving out iconic action set pieces and tension-filled moments such as the high school, where we first meet our toughest enemy type yet, the Bloater. Bill is not only a memorable character, but ‘Bill’s Town’ is also an iconic segment of the original story. Well, I didn’t only accept it, but I loved it!Įpisode 3 finally introduces us to Bill, a fan favourite from the game. It’s almost like the show started making small changes along the way, so that when the biggest change so far in Episode 3 came, I was ready and willing to accept it. I, of course, see the appeal of wanting to watch the story told without any changes, as that is originally what I wanted too, but as the HBO show has gone on I’ve learned to really enjoy the choices Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have made so far. Understandably, this episode has divided some fans of the game, who were looking for an untouched re-telling of the source material. The show has already made some changes to the game’s lore, but nothing as drastic as the third episode, Long Long Time. Spoiler alert: I am loving the show so far - goosebumps and all! So, naturally I came into the show day one with both excitement (paired with popcorn), but also a slight critical eye.
But, how do you adapt such a well-known story faithfully, whilst keeping those original audiences surprised?įull disclosure, The Last of Us is not only my favourite video game ever, but also my favourite story told in any form of entertainment. This is made even more impressive when we consider that this is an adaptation of one of the most critically acclaimed video games of all time. More importantly to me, it seems to have broken the dreaded ‘Video Game Curse’ that lingers over any adaptations of the format.
I think it’s easy to agree that for the most part, HBO’s rendition of The Last of Us has been a massive success so far, both for critics and audiences. I’ll try my best to give my opinion without ruining any major plot points. Before I start, I just wanted to give a slight spoiler warning for The Last of Us TV Show, and the original game.
